Ebook About Based on a series of lectures given by Leonard Peikoff in 1981, Principles of Grammar offers not only an organized survey of grammatical rules and principles but their connection to the principles of clear thinking and clear writing. “At the end of the course,” says Dr. Peikoff, “you should be able to see every grammatical rule, directly or indirectly, as a consequence or expression of some essential requirement of the human mind,” not “a simply a hodge-podge of memorized rules that make no sense. … I hope that [the course will give you] a sense of logic and security. Logic in regard to understanding the nature of grammatical issues—why they are as they are—and therefore security in regard to the whole subject. You will know the purpose, the rationale of the rules, and so I hope you will be able to think at the end that you can now make decisions on your own dubious or controversial cases. You don’t have to rely helplessly on authorities.”About the Author:Leonard PeikoffLeonard Peikoff is the preeminent Ayn Rand scholar writing today. Leonard Peikoff’s lectures communicate more wisdom than any college course that I have taken. In this series, he discusses grammar. In his usual clear and illuminating manner, he methodically explains the basics, articulates why certain words or punctuations are used in different situations and provides examples to demonstrate. My only complaint is that I was hoping there would be more philosophical explanations for why grammar is essential. As someone who has always been interested in proper grammar but not sure why the lack of it is problematic, I was interested to hear Dr. Peikoff's explanations. He explains the importance of clarity in both thinking and communicating and grammar's fundamental role in this. He also highlights how easy it is for intentions to be misconstrued without the correct grammar. If you are interested in clear communication, this book is a must. There is also a very detailed table of contents that can be used for future reference. I only hope that there are not too many grammatical errors in this review.... A concise little book on grammar that quickly gets to the meat of the matter.
